Inmarsat - Broadband for a mobile planet

System

Inmarsat is a system based on a geostationary satellite constellation with global coverage excluding the Poles.

Established in 1979 to provide satellite communication and safety systems for ships, in 2005 Inmarsat was turned into a publicly traded company at the Stock Exchange of London.
The initial project, pioneering the field of satellite telecommunications, evolved along the decades following the launch of several generations of satellites.
The latter to be launched into orbit are the Inmarsat I-4 with 3G standard, used for the BGAN - Broadband Global Area Network, FleetBroadband and IsatPhone services.

BGAN
BGAN is the first voice and data satellite service up to 492 kbps, with simultaneous access by means of a single portable terminal.
FleetBroadband
FleetBroadband allows using voice and data telecommunication services on board ships.

IsatPhone

Voice
The IsatPhone Pro allows for calls to be placed at extremely affordable rates, which are often less than the roaming rates charged by GSM service providers. There are no charges for incoming calls.

GPS
The IsatPhone Pro terminal features built-in GPS for determining the terminal's geographical coordinates and sending them via SMS.

BGAN

Voice
BGAN allows for telephone calls to be placed at extremely affordable rates, even during data transmissions; this function is made possible by connecting a normal BCA, ISDN or Bluetooth telephone device to the terminal (depending on the BGAN terminal being used).

Streaming IP
For applications in which the quality of the service is of fundamental impor- tance, like live video transmission or vid- eo conferencing, BGAN offers Streaming IP service with a guaranteed bandwidth up to 384 kbps (only available for the Ex- plorer 700 and Hughes 9201 terminals).
The connection speed can be selected based on the requirements. BGAN even supports ISDN connections at 64 kbps.

CERTAIN GSM operators may inhibit the sending/receiving of SMS text messages to/from satellite phones.
Streaming IP
Ideal for applications in which the quality of the service is of fundamental importance, like, for example, direct video transmission or video-conferencing.
The connection speed is guaranteed and can be selected based on the user’s needs, up to a maximum speed of 384 kbps (Sailor 500 terminal).
ISDN
The 64 kbps ISDN service is only available with the Sailor 500 terminal.

Countries under satellite coverage

Satellite services must be used complying with local regulations on use of satellite telephone devices..

Coverage includes the world between the 76° parallel North and the 76° parallel South.
Countries at the limits of the coverage area: satellite coverage may not always be available in parts of the territory in question.
