Inmarsat - Broadband for a mobile planet
System
Inmarsat is a system based on a geostationary satellite constellation with global coverage excluding the Poles.
Established in 1979 to provide satellite communication and safety systems for ships, in 2005 Inmarsat was turned into a publicly traded company at the Stock Exchange of London.
The initial project, pioneering the field of satellite telecommunications, evolved along the decades following the launch of several generations of satellites.
The latter to be launched into orbit are the Inmarsat I-4 with 3G standard, used for the BGAN - Broadband Global Area Network, FleetBroadband and IsatPhone services.

BGAN

For applications in which the quality of the service is of fundamental impor- tance, like live video transmission or vid- eo conferencing, BGAN offers Streaming IP service with a guaranteed bandwidth up to 384 kbps (only available for the Ex- plorer 700 and Hughes 9201 terminals).
The connection speed can be selected based on the requirements. BGAN even supports ISDN connections at 64 kbps.

The connection speed is guaranteed and can be selected based on the user’s needs, up to a maximum speed of 384 kbps (Sailor 500 terminal).

- The 64 kbps ISDN service is only available with the Sailor 500 terminal.
Countries under satellite coverage
Satellite services must be used complying with local regulations on use of satellite telephone devices..
Coverage includes the world between the 76° parallel North and the 76° parallel South.
Countries at the limits of the coverage area: satellite coverage may not always be available in parts of the territory in question.
