The Thuraya system is based on a network of geostationary satellites of the latest gen- eration, which offers coverage to 140 countries worldwide.
The operator, the Thuraya Telecommunications Company, was established in 1997 to provide mobile satellite telecommunications services to Europe, the Middle East and parts of Africa and Asia. The company's first satellite, Thuraya-1, was launched into or- bit in October of the year 2000. The service became operational just a few months later, in the second half of 2001. The coverage was further expanded over the following years thanks to the launch of additional satellites. Since 2008, Thuraya's services have also been available in the Far East and Oceania.
The system supports data and voice transmissions via satellite. The network is designed to provide personal mobile services even in remote areas, and offers a wide range of products for vehicular, marine and terrestrial use.
Satellite services must be used complying with local regulations on use of satellite telephone devices...
